SAILBOAT BLOCK INSTRUCTIONS The Sailboat or West Wind block is very easy to piece as it is comprised entirely of half-square triangles. But don’t be fooled by its simple appearance; this bold, graphic block can be assembled in various ways -- all with stunningly beautiful results. Most settings have the look of Native American-inspired Pendelton or Beacon blankets. A little experimentation on your part is sure to yield intriguing possibilities! For rotary cutting 6" blocks, cut: Five - 2-7/8" squares from dark fabric Pair each light square with a dark square of the same size, right sides together and edges lined up: |

| Then cut down the center line, producing two square units: |

| Press seam allowances toward the dark fabric. At this point, the smaller units should measure 2-1/2" and the large units 4-1/2" . Each block is made up of five small units and one large. Assemble as shown: |

You might want to try a diagonal setting or reduce the size of the block for a much more intricate design. (To easily change the block size, simply decide the finished size of the square units that make up the block and add 7/8" for the cutting size.) If you prefer templates for a 6" block, click here.
